COMPARING TECHNOLOGIES

INFRARED

Uses an infrared beams to create an imperceptible tripwire line across an entrance. Each time the line is breached by a passer, a tick will be registered as a person. Though low cost and easy to installation, it lacks directional measurement, does not work under direct sunlight(indoor use only, and has only 60%-80% accuracy rate).

THERMAL VIDEO

Capable of detecting the heat signatures of human bodies making it more accurate than infrared however, it involves high installation and maintenance costs and accuracy is highly susceptible to weather and local humidity conditions.

iBEACON

Wireless technology that uses Bluetooth to provide precise location-based info about smartphone holders. Useful for areas where GPS Location may not be reliably available such as in shopping malls. Though highly accurate, application is limited to iphone users(ios 7 and up) and does not track other smartphones or cellular phones. It also requires the bluetooth to be turned on for a user to be tracked.

WIFI LOCATION & TRACKING

One of the most popular methods of tracking pedestrian behavior making use of wifi-enabled devices that regularly send a unique identifier for each device, allowing precise counting and tracking. Althougn a user doesn't have to be connected to the wifi, it still requires the wifi function to be turned on, thus affecting accuracy.

3D CAMERAS

Currently, there are range of technologies involved in people counting but the latest and most advanced systems involve use of 3D video cameras to produce robust and highly accurate data on customer behavior patterns. Though the use of 3D cameras, in-store customer behavior can be gathered unobtrusively/ It also does not require use of any device or app.
